During the implementation of lean, an important step is establishing a '5S'
program. The term '5S' is derived from the Japanese words for the five
components of the program. The five components are:
· Seiri (Sort) - separate out what is needed from unneeded and eliminate
the unneeded,
· Seiton (Straighten) - arrange what is needed in the order of use or other
logical arrangement and label,
· Seiso (Shine) - cleanup the work area,
· Seiketsu (Standardize) - create a standardized process to sort, straighten,
and shine on a frequent, daily/weekly/monthly basis, and
· Shitsuke (Self Discipline) - establishing the habit of performing the first
four components.
The Inventory Red Tag tool was designed to assist with the Sorting step of the
5S program by providing tags that can be used to identify items that may need to
be separated out as well as a tracking tool to document dispositions.
How To Use
1. From the Project Panel, click the Implementation tab, then the Inventory Red
Tag button.
2. Attach tags to items with tape and/or string.
3. Use the “RED TAG FORM” to print tags that will be cut and mounted
on
items of indeterminate use. Tags can be printed on paper or cardstock
(recommended).
4. Instruct people working in the area to record any usage on the “Usage Log”
section of the tag.
5. On the Usage Log Sheet, enter project information into the header block.
6. To add more rows for items, click the Insert Additional Rows button.
Enter the number of new rows to add, and then click OK.
New blank rows will be added to the bottom of the Usage Log.
7. If item is obviously trash or broken beyond repair, do not attach red tag, but
log it on the “LOG SHEET” with a ‘T’ disposition code. Place the item in the
garbage (or appropriate waste repository).
8. To print the Log Sheet, click the Print button.
Microsoft Excel® will open the Print window.
9. To email the Log Sheet, click the email button.
Microsoft Outlook® will open the New Message window (if the workstation is
configured to send email).
10. After a suitable period of time (e.g. after 30 days),
review the items
remaining in the “Red Tag Hold Area” and disposition.
Disposition Codes:
